Back by popular demand, Cowichan Food Hub presents our online two-part series in kombucha making!
What is kombucha, you ask? It’s a drink with a LONG history, having traveled the Silk Road alongside traditional tea. It’s a fermented, sweetened (and in this case, black) tea. Sometimes, people think it’s a little stinky and sour smelling, but don’t worry, it’s supposed to smell like that! This distinctive kombucha smell and taste is caused by the SCOBY converting sugars into ethanol and acetic acid. SCOBY stands for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts” and is alive, with active yeast and bacteria, in your “booch”.
The first workshop session is Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 7pm where we’ll introduce you to all things kombucha, and lead you through setting up your first fermentation.
The second workshop session will be on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 7pm where we’ll go through how to add flavours to your kombucha (AKA the second fermentation), and how to look after your new child, your SCOBY (maybe brainstorm some names, apparently it helps you remember to look after it).
This two-part series is online, costs $30, and includes a kombucha making kit:
Registering for this event registers you for both sessions. Due to this being a series, there will be two workshops listed for both dates, but only one link to register for both sessions.
You will be able to pick up your kombucha making kit starting the week before the event, up until 4:30pm on September 21, 2022. Registration for this event will end at 12AM on September 21, 2022 to ensure that we have time to pack your kombucha making kit for you to pick up.
The Zoom link will be sent out prior to the event.
If you need accommodations (live transcriptions, financial, or otherwise) please reach out at least 72 hours ahead of time to Dani at dani@cowichangreencommunity.org.
